Born in London in 1960 to West Indian parents, my Dad was an engineer, my Mum a secretary. I had a keen interest in aircraft as a boy, and my father encouraged me and bought me a Frog Spitfire in 1/72nd that we built together. Our second kit was the Airfoil 1/24th scale Me109E, a huge jump. After that he left me to it and I was off to the races!
Once I reached my teenage years, after 5 years in the Air Training Corps, the usual distractions led me away from modeling for about 45 years, until the pandemic in 2020.
My wife is high risk, so I took temporary voluntary unemployment, and to keep boredom at bay, my wife suggested a return to scale modeling. After making a couple of aircraft, Julie bought me the venerable Tamiya Panther, which I thoroughly enjoyed building and using my newly acquired cheapie airbrush from Amazon. But after building it, I thought it just looked wrong sitting on the table, so I googled "How to build dioramas", got onto YouTube and learned so much. That was me hooked!
After a few months of this new obsession, I decided to stop boring my regular Facebook friends, and started a separate Facebook made just for my hobby, called Emdee Scale Models.
With our daughter going off to University, her room became available, and now, after 5 years, I have moved off the kitchen table and now have my own dedicated model room. Exciting times ahead!
